Location

The grounds sit along the eastern bank of the Lake Vembanad, the largest lake in Kerala. Vaikom town, approximately 4 kilo meters from the Villa, is a small and bustling town, with its markets, street vendors, shops, and a very popular pilgrim destination in the Vaikom Siva Temple.

It is a hub of other major tourist destinations in Kerala such as Cochin, Kumarakom (famous for its bird sanctuary), Alapuzha (Alleppey), Munnar, Thekkady, Kovalam, Kollam, Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), Varkala, Kozhikode (Calicut), as well as Bangalore, Goa and Madras.

 

Vaikom Siva Temple:

One of the oldest temple in South India.The temple architecture is a typical example of the extravagant Kerala architecture. The Ashami festival of the Vaikom Mahadeva Temple (Siva temple) is held every year (November or December depending on religious calendars) and attracts thousands of devotees from all over Kerala.

 

Famous Vaikom Satyagraha

The famous Vaikom Satyagraha was organized here by Indian National Congress; Mahatma Gandhi was here to support the movement.It was organised to fight against the age old custom of prohibiting the backward communities from entering the temple and even using the public roads around it.

 

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary

Located on the banks of the Vembanad Lake, the bird sanctuary is spread across 14 acres. The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, an ornithologist's paradise is a favourite haunt of migratory birds like the siberian stork, egret, darter, heron and teal.. A visit to the bird sanctuary, set within the lush acres of wooded land nearby, acquaints you to the variety of migratory birds that flock in thousands, some from the Himalayas, some even from as far as Siberia. In addition, you can get thrilled of the native kingfishers ablaze in psychedelic colours, experience a walk under rookeries of egrets and night herons or lone golden-backed woodpeckers and even delight in the acrobatics of the paradise fly-catchers..
